The New Year is here and this time of year makes for a truly wonderful winter getaway, North Yorkshire is a little quieter which means you can enjoy all the area has to offer without the business that the summer season brings. Take in some of our local history
We are so lucky to be nestled in and area brimming with history! North Yorkshire is host to an abundance of castles and abbeys open for your exploration, with some of our closest being Richmond Castle, Ripley Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Fountains Abbey. Each of them brings their own unique story to the area, and make for a great day out.
Less than half an hour’s drive from us is the oldest city in England. Ripon is a small historic cathedral city in North Yorkshire, and the origins can be traced back to the 7th century! Steeped in history, you will find magnificent historical buildings, award winning museums, and the grand gothic cathedral. There are also lots of lovely little streets and snickets that are home to some eclectic and independent shops for you to enjoy.
Venture into the countryside
Something undeniable about North Yorkshire is the beauty of our local countryside. We are spoilt for choice with two national parks to explore – the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.
There are plenty of opportunities for you to head out into the countryside, enjoy the rolling hills, and admire some stunning views. Or, why not head over to the East coast if sea and sand are more your thing? We’re less than an hour’s drive away from the nearest beach.
Explore our market towns
In North Yorkshire we very lucky to have lots of market towns nearby that are also are enriched in history, including Northallerton, Richmond, and Knaresborugh to name just a few!
Our nearest town, Northallerton, is only five minutes away and is a gorgeous market town with so much to offer. The busy high street is full of plenty of variety, with many shops, cafes, bakers and butchers for you to enjoy! They have a market twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays too, both sides of the high street become home to a range of stalls for you to browse. And, of course, the iconic Bettys Café & Tea Room is an absolute must when visiting the area.
We’re also not far from Harrogate and York if you’re looking to visit somewhere a little bigger during your trip!
Enjoy a stay at a traditional pub
All this would be made even better by retreating back to a traditional Yorkshire inn, for a refreshing drink, delicious meal, cosy stay – or all three!
